Summary/Abstract: Old age is the last state of man's earthly existence, before he moves into eternity. It brings with it many trials, weaknesses, often sickness and suffering, but also countless joys when you learn to be grateful. On the occasion of the declaration by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church of the year 2023 as the "Year of the Pastoral Care of the Elderly", this study aims to highlight what it means to assume old age, how we can support the elderly and how important is their mission in the Church and society. The first chapter, entitled "Scriptural references to the elderly", highlights old age from the pages of Holy Scripture. We find models of wise elders, but also some very important exhortations about old age and its implications. The second chapter, "Patristic testimonies on the meaning and value of old age", summarises the views and advice of the Holy Fathers on the assumption and spiritual experience of old age. The third chapter, entitled "Care of the elderly in the family environment", contains arguments for and against caring for the elderly at home. The fourth chapter summarises the advantages and disadvantages of "treating and supporting the elderly in specialised centres" (palliative care, nursing homes). The fifth chapter, ,,The attitude and responsibilities of the priest in relation to the elderly and those in distress", presents a pastoral summary of the priest's duty to seek out and help vulnerable elderly people, and beyond. The penultimate chapter is a rather complex one, as it brings up a delicate and always topical issue, namely , "The problem of euthanasia - moral and spiritual implications". The last chapter presents "The role and mission of older people in the Church and society". The study is completed by conclusions.
