XRF Investigations on the Pigments of the Jesus Christ Icon, Belonging to the "Biserica Galbenă" Parish in Urlaţi, Prahova County

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the analysis of the pictorial pigments of the icon representing Jesus Christ, belonging to the "Biserica Galbenă" Parish in Urlaţi, Prahova county, using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The wooden icon has an inscription that dates it to the year 1852. The analyses were carried out to provide complementary documentation to support the restorer, thus carrying out an assumed intervention on the heritage object. The results of the analyses indicate the use of certain pigments: the preparation layer is lead white; red color, a cinnabar red pigment; blue color, synthetic ultramarine blue; green color, earth green; yellow color, iron ochre; the black color is obtained from a mixture of iron oxides and carbon black; brown color, a mixture of iron oxides; and the golden pigment is gold leaf. All these analyses produced an overall picture, facilitating the entire restoration process, thus the heritage object was saved and the passage of time remained as a noble imprint, giving the icon value and portliness.
