READERS' LETTERS AND MIGRANTS. WHAT DO WE SAY ABOUT MIGRANTS WHEN WE TALK ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE?

Summary/Abstract: In two corpus, originating from Catholic newspapers and from the weekly Valeurs actuelles, we studied the representation of migrants in letters to the editor centered on themes other than migration. We showed the oppositions of the representations of migrants in these corpus when it comes to (1) groups that present similarities with them, (2) groups that are opposed to their reception in France, (3) people who interact with them, (4) what they experience or what they benefit from, (5) what they do and (6) what should be done about their situation. We also show a great homogeneity of each of these corpus. The strong opposition of the representations of these two corpus can be explained by the conception that the writers have of the vulnerability associated with migrants: they are perceived as a vulnerable population in Catholic newspapers and, on the contrary, as a population that would be source of vulnerability for France or Europe, in Valeurs actuelles.
