Summary/Abstract: Scaffolding is a relevant construct in conceptualizing the student-teacher interaction and designing qualitative learning environmentsaccording to the socio-cultural theory of Vygotsky. However, in the area of scaffolding, research is not very smooth mainly because scaffolding is a dynamic process that takes place in the teacher-student interaction and is highly contextualized, thus it is hard to identify the unit of analysis and to differentiate between scaffolding and other interactions. In current education, there is a high tendency to use information and communication technology (ICT) in designing learning environments. The present article aims to answer the question if ICT is an effective tool in scaffolding by looking at studies investigating scaffolding and the role of ICT in learning.
