Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to explain the nature of phonetic and semantic changes of the Polish word ciżma ‘crakow, a medieval style of shoes with extremely long toes’. Turkish lexeme çizme ‘boot’ appeared in the Balkans due to Ottoman Turkish expansion in 14th and 15th century, then entered Hungary, and went north through Hungarian. It is or was present in Venetian, Romanian, most of Slavic languages, Lithuanian and others. The paths of how this Turkish word spread across the languages of Europe are briefly presented as well.
