Summary/Abstract: The dissolution of marriage is a distressing process which on the one hand generates emotional and behavioral problems, and on the other hand disrupts family life. For some children, adapting to a completely unexpected life can be a long-term process as they have to cope with feelings of helplessness or guilt. As the entire family system is being reshaped, various loyalty conflicts may occur. The children who manage to keep in touch with the parent they no longer live with are more likely to overcome the traumatic effects of a divorce. The child`s refusal to have any contact with either parent after the divorce can have various causes, most often a potential parental alienation. The complexity of this issue makes psychological assessments and Family Court decisions a difficult endeavour. Is the child subjected to parental alienation, controlled by the parent whom s/he lives with, caught in the middle of the never-ending conflict between parents, or even is he a victim of abuse? The refusal of contact is not always determined by the child`s being under control. His hostility might as well have originated during the marriage, could be short-lived or engendered by either parent`s excess of authority. Thus, due to the intricacy of the whole issue which aims at the best interest of the child, parental alienation experts could sometimes get confused, hence potential subsequent misjudgements. But once proven, parental alienation can bring about severe consequences for both the child and the parents involved in this mechanism.
