Summary/Abstract: The paper critically discusses the isotopy-disjunction model (IDM) developed by Salvatore Attardo for the analysis of verbal and referential jokes. We present the main assumptions of the IDM model, focusing on issues such as isotopy, isotopy triggers and narrative functions. The paper also addresses subsequent attempts to develop the IDM model, including the present author’s proposal to increase the number of triggers.
