Summary/Abstract: The main goal of the author is to compare Polish and Swedish pedagogical and cultural debates surrounding the social attitude and the message conveyed by the adventures of Pippi Långstrump, the main character of the well-known books for children by Astrid Lindgren. In Sweden the appearance of Pippi Longstocking resulted in a turmoil among the specialists in education and social engineering, whereas in Poland the rebellious qualities of the redhaired girl were not perceived as controversial. It was partly thank to the translation by Irena Szuch-Wyszomirska, who gave up the attempt to ensure a congeniality of the text for the sake of semantic interventions aimed at situating the narrative in the Polish cultural context. However, the main part was played by the tendency of the readers living in communist regime to interpret the unwillingness to compromise and the independence of the girl towards the authorities as a metaphor (the first Polish edition of the book written in original in 1944 was published in 1961).
