Summary/Abstract: The current study aims to explore the narrative construction of national identity in Vladimir Putin’s and Volodymiyr Zelensky’s public discourses. I selected two speeches, one of V. Putin (2014) given to both chambers of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, announcing the annexation of Crimea, and a discourse in the form of a videoconference held by V. Zelensky (2022). The selected discourses have Crimea as main topic, and are analyzed by adopting R. Wodak’s framework of critical discourse analysis (CDA), T.A. van Dijk’s political approach, and N. Fairclough’s model of representation of social events. The analysis focuses on the choices of the two speakers in terms of the embedded linguistic features and relevant structures of power, as well as of the historical events they refer to.
