Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problem of choices of adequate approaches in teaching foreign languages. The author analyzes the different approaches based on psychology of teaching, the object of teaching, and the subject of teaching. Accordingly, there is a set of classifications of approaches such as cognitive, behaviorist, conscious, integrated, direct, active and so on. Anyhow, the author emphasizes the importance of the communicative approach which is a basis of communicative competence, the content of which is determined by the language competence, speech competence, and socio-cultural competence. The author concludes that the educators must try out numerous approaches for promoting students’ interest in lifelong language learning.
