The Last Medieval Tsaritsas of Tarnovo

Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to Theodora II, wife of Tsar Yoan Alexandar, Maria, wife of Tsar Yoan Shishman and the unknown daughter of Lazar Hrebelyanovich, who included her name in the family tree of the Assen dynasty in the late 1380s – the three women who shared the dramatic fate of their royal husbands, who occupied the throne of Tarnovo in the years of the blood-red sunset of the medieval Balkans. The study clarifies the chronology of the divorce and the second marriage of Yoan Alexandar. It also presents all the information about Tsaritsa Kira Maria. Finally, the author analyzes the source base on which our knowledge of Princess Lazarevic’s marriage in the Royal House of Tarnovo is based and substantiates the conclusion that the available sources do not allow definitive identification of the persons who entered into this marriage. The results of the present study help to clarify and shed light on some data from the biography of the last female rulers of Tarnovo.
