Summary/Abstract: The metaphor of sundown applied to the Balkan events of the second half of the 14th century is deeply rooted in the common reflection of the Ottoman conquest by its contemporaries, witnesses and participants. The events following the battle – both anticipated and unexpected, sudden and continuous – have been interpreted in the history writing of Bulgarians, Serbs and Byzantines within the common Balkan context. The viewpoints of the Orthodox writers stressed the significance of the battle as milestone, further developing its meaning in three perspectives: historical (among the other major events of the conquest), political (changes in the leadership, statuses and politics of the Balkan states) and eschatological (as an omen of the coming World’s end).
