Summary/Abstract: The preserved embroideries from archaeological excavations are mainly with metal thread. The laid and couched technique was used. The other technique used was ‘through the cloth’, i.e., the metal thread passes through the cloth. It has been established that silk thread had also been included in the metal thread embroidery. In another group of embroideries, the metal or silk thread passes through the cloth but forms interlaced design on the face. There are very few surviving embroideries in which only silk threads are involved.
