Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this publication is to provide an overview of the relationship between certain personality traits and alexithymia. Alexithymia is a personality characteristic that defines a deficit in cognitive abilities for emotional regulation. Multiple studies present data on the negative consequences on the mental and somatic health of individuals with high levels of alexithymia. Therapeutic resistance has been demonstrated in such patients, as well as difficulties in close interpersonal relationships. Data on the relationship of alexithymia with personality traits according to the Big Five model, the Dark Triad, and the attachment style are also presented. The presence of alexithymia in the general population and in relation to different demographic factors is explored. The overview aims to open up space for the development of research questions that can support a more in-depth study of the construct.
