Summary/Abstract: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are increasingly used to implement key projects resulting from the statutory tasks of various services and state institutions. In Poland, they are used, for example, to monitor and protect the state border by the Border Guard, detect and combat fire threats by fire brigade units, or conduct preventive activities by the Police. The advantages of unmanned aviation include, above all, the unlimited ability to move and monitor hard-to-reach areas. UAVs are smaller and cheaper to operate than traditional aircraft. The undoubted advantage of the UAV is the short planning and execution time of a given aviation task, high mobility and maneuver-ability. Therefore, it is necessary and justified to implement UAVs also in other state institutions, especially those where the element of monitoring or reconnaissance is crucial in their activities. Such an institution is the Prison Service (PS) discussed in the article, which is a service that has not used such solutions so far. Therefore, the main research goal was to examine the suitability of the UAV system to provide effective support to penitentiary units during the implementation of everyday work tasks. The main research problem was formulated as a question: What functionalities of the UAV system are useful for implementing the tasks performed by the Prison Service? The main research hypothesis took the form of the assumption that the functionalities possessed by UAVs can provide significant support in the performance of tasks by PS officers and are an element of their development that should be implemented. The collected research material was used to formulate conclusions proving the usefulness of unmanned systems for official tasks performed by the Prison Service.
