Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on several important aspects of Shakespeare’s reception in Romania in the 20th century, with special reference to Macbeth. The main aim of the paper is to underline the gradually changing perspective of the Romanian intellectuals on Shakesperae as well as their improving competence in his work. In addition to this, special attention is given to their constant effort to reestablish the historical truth that, due to the political context in the second half of the 20th century, was seriously altered and, as a consequence, often gave the Romanian readers a distorted Shakespeare.
