Summary/Abstract: After the Lesvos Island came under Ottoman rule, the ports here performed important duties. Olive oil and soap obtained from the island became the favorite of Istanbul and the palace, and the island became an important point of Ottoman domestic and foreign trade. The reason for this was the favorable location of the island which allowed the port to grow in importance in the following years. By the 18th century activities on the trade routes around the island decreased due to geographical discoveries and the change of trade routes. However, Lesbos and its surroundings continued to be important both locally and in the Eastern-Mediterranean trade. In our study, we discussed some of the problems around custom tax in the 18th century on the island of Lesvos. These were general problems such as tax evasion reluctance to pay taxes at all, unloading or receiving goods from other ports without permission. We aimed to show how the customs of Lesbos reacted to these problems, what solutions the central and local governments offered and how these were implemented on the island.
