Summary/Abstract: Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu was an outstanding chemical engineer who worked in the field of geology. She was the first female chemical engineer worldwide and among the first engineers in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century, she was not allowed to study in Romania because there were no women enrolled in technical schools in the country. Morally supported by her brother, the well-known Romanian engineer Dimitrie Leonida, she chose to study at the Royal Technical Academy of Berlin, Charlottenburg, against all the prejudices of the foreign professors towards women. After graduation, despite a job offer from a large German company, she returned to Romania and worked at the National Institute of Geology. In the framework of the laboratories she set up, Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu carried out pioneering work in geology and geochemistry. In this paper, we pay tribute to her life and work, as this year marks the 50th commemoration of her death.
