Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt at summary of the discussion on republicanism of the Polish Solidarity and the Eastern-European dissidence movement of 1970s and 1980s that took place after the fall of communism in 1989. The author comments on the debate’s sources and most important threads, placing them within the context of contemporary political philosophy. She presents three ways in which republicanism has been evoked in the debate: as a historical analogy, as a tradition that is intellectually coherent with the movement’s ideas, and as the movement’s legacy. In this way, the author comes closer to choosing a type of republicanism that corresponds with the Polish experience, and, what is more important, to evaluating the debate itself.
