Summary/Abstract: The Frick Collection’s temporary move from the 1912 Frick mansion to Breuer’s 1960’s era “brutalist” building on Madison Avenue in Manhattan has put an intriguing spotlight on the complex question of art and context. (Links to buildings/works mentioned and selected bibliography appear on final page.) The dramatic change in setting encourages engaging with the Frick’s masterpieces in new ways. Moreover, exploration of the Frick’s exceptional situation reveals that context is a compelling framework for consideration of the Parthenon Marbles at the British Museum in London, the masterpieces of the church of San Giobbe at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Venice, and the Mrinalini Mukherjee sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
