Summary/Abstract: The author describes various phenomena which, although not directly associated with waste, can influence the efficiency of how food is used, and, thus, in certain situations, be considered a form of waste. Such “borderline” situations include the recognition of “invisible” food, creative use of leftovers, putting food on your plate, and eating food from garbage bins. What all these situations share in common is that as a result of them, a portion of edible food remains uneaten. The author asks if these can be considered examples of wasteful practices. An affirmative answer would require two conditions. The first is the need to recognize a given object as a food, because people do not perceive everything that is suitable for eating. The second is the need to recognize the value of food. Not every act of food disposal is considered wasteful.
