Summary/Abstract: Review: The Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare and Popular Culture, Robert Shaughnessy, ed. The ‘Cambridge Companions to Literature’ series, Cambridge 2007. The Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare and Popular Culture is not just yet another book on our contemporary cinema, novelistic or operatic adaptations or remakes of Shakespeare’s works. The reviewer argues that using this collection of outstandingly well documented articles, the reader may retrace the various stages of Shakespeare’s (re-)popularisation, whilst at the same time getting acquainted with the broad phenomenon of how Shakespeare is used and transformed in popular culture. But above all, the book reminds us that Shakespeare’s original output is deeply rooted in mass culture, and that the perception of this author as a high-culture icon originates in the nineteenth century.
