Summary/Abstract: One of the main directions of the breeding programs in common winter wheat, besides increasing productivity, is developing of cultivars with excellent baking properties. An important prerequisite for this is the involvement of new gene plasma of variable origin, which is adequate to the growing conditions and the desired breeding direction. The aim of the investigation was to characterize the status of the collection of genus Triticum maintained at Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute (DAI) under conditions of ex situ storage. The collection of DAI keeps in storage 3436 varieties, breeding lines and wild forms of wheat with origin from 30 countries. The highest percent are the accessions from Bulgaria (48%), followed by USA (5%) and Russia, Mexico, Germany (4%). There are 9 wheat species of genus Triticum, the predominant ones being aestivum and durum. These accessions constitute 98% of the species composition. Although only a small percent (2%), the materials of the species turgidum, dicoccoides, monococcum and polonicum are of certain interest. The investigated collection comprises of valuable gene plasm of genus Triticum, which can be not only useful in the breeding programs as a source of parental forms but is also a means to preserving the genetic variability in wheat
