Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I will highlight the various connotations of the term vis, specifically its meaning in Roman private law and in public law. In doing so, I will address the evo-lution of the concept of violence starting in the times of the Republic and throughout the Principate, up to the considerations given by Isidore of Seville.
