Summary/Abstract: St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696–1787), Doctor of the Church and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, devoted much attention in his writings to the Christian path to holiness. In his works, he showed believers how to pray and follow Jesus Christ in everyday life. Two texts are dedicated exclusively to the person of St. Joseph: Seven meditations in honour of St. Joseph for the seven days before his feast and The sermon for the feast of St. Joseph. The aim of the article is to show how St. Joseph – presented in the writings of St. Alphonsus – personifies the Christian ideal of holiness promoted by Doctor the Most Zealous. Comparing the image of the Guardian of the Son of God drawn by the Saint from Naples with the figure of St. Joseph, described in contemporary papal documents, it can be stated whether and to what extent the Alphonsian pattern of holiness remains valid in modern times.
