@ – SYMBOL OF ONLINE COMMUNICATION

Summary/Abstract: For several decades, the @ symbol has acquired in most of the world’s languages, including Romanian, a new meaning that it did not previously have: a separator between the user’s name and the name of the virtual domain (five centuries ago, its prototype was used exclusively with an economic meaning). Its sense has expanded, becoming today a true symbol of virtual space. Hypertext is flooded with lexical formations in which @ replaces the letter ‘a,’ thus suggesting attachment to the culture and ideology of the internet.
