Summary/Abstract: The book, as an intellectual product at the intersection between social and individual, marked by the judgments of time on the times that are contemporary to it, combining in itself different fractions of innovation but also of creative inertia, represents an object of study with a vast revealing potential. The French historian and journalist François Furet studied in detail all the stages of book production in France in the 18th century. His objective was to reveal some significant regularities and constants for the reconstruction of a socio-cultural image of the respective stage of development of the French state and the society that lived in it. This goal was achieved through an external analysis of the actual content of the books, studying the data from the registers of the Royal Library Administration, which are currently in the inventory of the National Library of France.
