Summary/Abstract: The author disusses the correlation bewtween ethnicity and confession. Even though the general assumption that ethnic and confessional group identities in Transylvania coincide is true, it is at least oversimplified. As case study, the towns of Kronstadt (Braşov), Hermannstadt (Sibiu) and Bistritz (Bistriţa) are analysed with a few examples. It is showed that confessional affiliation had a major impact on collective identities and could not be completely eliminated by modern nationalism.
