Summary/Abstract: This analysis aims to shed light on the relationship between the two main characters in Julio Cortázar's novel, Hopscotch, namely Horacio Oliveira and La Maga (Lucía). While Oliveira has a more clearly defined profile as a character in his own right, La Maga is seen only from the male perspective, either Horacio's or, less prominently, the narrator's. The female character remains elusive, almost a figment of the male imagination, but still manages, thanks to her extraordinary intuition, to highlight Oliveira's flaws, or rather his shortcomings. Against the eclectic and tumultuous backdrop of 1960s Paris, their relationship is an example of amorous failure, the two being unable to find sufficient bridges of communication.
