Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the essence of civil society and the rule of law in the light of two paradigmatic approaches: subject-object and subject-subject. The traditions of the interaction of these concepts are treated as factors of contemporary civilization development. It is proposed to use the historical experience of public contract theory to build a truly legal platform in which the freedom of citizens comes first. It is pointed out that civil society is possible only if obligations are fulfilled equally by all participants in legal relations.
