The intellectual biography of Thomas Aquinas

Summary/Abstract: In these pages we will try to develop an intellectual biography of our author, not aiming to describe all the events in St. Thomas life, but trying to look for his main intellectual influences. Even if the strict chronological approach is also interesting, we consider that this “philosophical biography” is probably more clarifying and will help philosophical scholars to understand the author and its time. We will focus on the formative steps that led him to comment and develop the thought of Aristotle in general terms, and Metaphysics in particular. We will consider, therefore, the influences and motivations that probably drove him to comment Aristotle’s Metaphysics. We decided to construct this biography around this Aristotelian treatise because we consider that it shows the main changes in St Thomas’s though.
