Source of Gelatian Translation (K14) of St. Maximus the Confessor's "Questions and Doubts to Thalasses”

Summary/Abstract: One of the most important works of St. Maximus the Confessor is “Questions and Doubts to Thalasses”. The essay is of an exegetical nature. In it the worthy father explains some difficult passages of Scripture. The paper is written in the form of questions and answers. The initiator of the selection of explanatory texts is the worthy Thales, who sends questions to St. Maximus. There are 65 questions in total. The Kutaisi State Historical Museum preserves a 12th century manuscript containing the works of St. Maximus the Confessor. It contains 24 works of the Holy Father. One of them is the text of the Georgian translation of “Questions and Doubts to Thalasses”. Related to the manuscript one of the research questions is to determine the source of the Gelatian translation of St. Maximus the Confessor's "Questions and Doubts to Thalasses". for this it is essential to take into account the Greek manuscript tradition of "Questions and Doubts". The Greek manuscripts of St. Maximus' novels are divided into two genealogical families: One is an ItalianGreek family and the other is an Oriental family. Taking into account the original Greek texts, the paper presents the results of the research, in particular, from which version of the Greek manuscripts the Gelatian translation derives. It was established that the Gelatian manuscript derives from a currently unknown Greek manuscript belonging to the N manuscript group of the ω family.
