Summary/Abstract: András Visky is a theatre dramaturge, playwright, and essayist. He is also known for his barrack dramaturgy, which he developed at Kolozsvári Állami Magyar Színház (State Hungarian Theatre of Cluj) in Kolozsvár, Transylvania. Samuel Beckett and Imre Kertész had a deep influence on him, regarding his attitude toward language. What is Theatre for? On the Way of Theatrum Theologicum is a collection of his writings on theatre. The titles of the four parts of the book are Studies, Essays, Diaries, and Dialogue. His main topic is the problem of presence and ’present tense’ in theatre. According to Visky this presence occurs within the spectator as well as the noticeable absence of God, which is perceptible not just in art but in the Church as well. He raises the question of whether theatre should replace the role of the Church.
