The Representation of Posthuman Scenes in Puppet Theatre. An Analysis of Frankenstein, Directed by Tamás Keresztes

Summary/Abstract: My paper examines the representation of posthuman theory and its impact on the visuals of a theatre production. I analyse the effect of displaying the superhuman dimension on the perception of a particular performance, namely Frankenstein, which premiered at the Budapest Puppet Theatre in 2022. I explore how the human and non-human worlds mix on stage, how they are embodied, and how their visuals affect the interpretation of the production and our image of today’s man. I claim that incorporating the superhuman dimension into the visual world of a performance gives a deeper interpretation and provides insight into our humanity. This incorporation emphasizes the irrationality of human existence and emotions, questions the humanist perception of man, while sensitizing the topic and bringing it closer to the spectators.
