Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the onymic motivations of the origin of the Slovak oikonym Čereňany. This name originated from an inhabitant name, but there are different opinions on the interpretation of the origin and motivation of this anthroponym. In particular, the author points out the differences between etymological and onomastic approaches in the interpretation of oikonyms, but also in the interpretation of proper names in general.
