Summary/Abstract: In the first half of the 20th century, Saaremaa was conquered three times with successful landing operations. The landing of the 1917 Imperial German Army Expeditionary Corps was landed from large warships on the open sea on the shores of Tagalahe on the northwest coast of Saaremaa. The invasion of the Wehrmacht in September 1941 and the landing of the Red Army three years later were carried out from mainland Estonia via the Great Strait, Muhumaa and Väikes veina dams. The article provides an overview of all three operations and evaluates their conduct based on doctrines and principles of warfare.
