Summary/Abstract: The article proposes a new research term, namely “self-rewriting,” created with referenceto Michel Foucault’s concept, which reveals the narcissistic and transgressive aspect ofthe culture of the self. It becomes a tool for analyzing the author’s shaping-style processesand his/her work on the self. The article analyses the transformation of Ewa Kuryluk’swriting style in the period 1970–2005. The research was based on a comparison of twoeditions of two essayistic books, that is Wiedeńska Apokalipsa (Viennese Apocalypse;1974; 1999) and Podróży do granic sztuki (The Journey to the Limits of Art; 1982; 2005),whose second editions were broadly edited by the author. “Self-rewriting” reveals themark left on Kuryluk’s style by the experience of emigration, the need to adapt to foreignlanguages, the knowledge of her mother’s Jewish identity, and the technologicalrevolution, namely the replacement of a typewriter with a computer.
