Summary/Abstract: The archive stores the eternity of social memories and humanity in general, and it is the treasure of a society, nation and country, therefore it is called “The Memory of Society”. Such is the archive of missing persons at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, within the Ministry of Justice, which was established in 2005. The archive of missing persons in addition to representing a special historical value, is at the same time a documentary of painful events that happened all around Kosovo during 1998-1999, including the massacres, mass killings and enforced disappearances. Following the end of war in 1999, together with many devastations and losses, Kosovo was faced with the issue of missing persons, where around 6000 individuals have been estimated to have gone missing and nothing was known about their fate. Separate files have been created for each individual with the registry of missing persons. On this occasion it was necessary to formally store them and subsequently the archive of missing persons was created within the Office of Missing Persons and Forensics, under UNMIK. The archive of missing persons is considered an important asset and as such very specific, since it entails both a painful and glorious history of Kosovo.
