Cultural Intricacies: Proverb-Based Wordplay and Irony in Translation

Summary/Abstract: Wordplay and irony are among the most difficult features of language, especially when it comes to translating them to another language. These rhetorical devices not only create a tension between different meanings, but also between different domains of knowledge and experience. And their complexity is even greater when they are based on proverbs, which are in turn very intricate units of language. Therefore, they can create serious translation difficulties, both linguistic and cultural, which might make them resist transfer to the target language. The present paper will highlight the main challenges posed by their translation, while also pointing out some strategies used by the Romanian translator when dealing with English proverb-based wordplay and irony.
