Summary/Abstract: Ismail Kadare puts a series of historical personalities into the “mechanism” of his prose, which, of course, transform into literary characters and should be treated as such. Their construction, characterization, how they look, their ideas and ideology, the action, all these now become part of the fictional world of his novels. History is the source of borrowing, but artistic prose is the new ‘home’ of these characters. When we search for Skënderbeu in Kadare’s prose, we are searching for Skënderbeu of Kadare. Since Kadare’s interests in history, state affairs, power, politics, political crimes, are permanent and appear in most of his novels, the historical personalities that are fictionalized in his prose are numerous. Kadare is particularly interested in the high levels of historical roles. He deals with personalities who have greatly influenced the course of Alba nian history. Skënderbeu, the Albanian main hero, Ali Pashë Tepelena, the statesman who had not become an Albanian statesman, Enver Hoxha, the communist dictator, who in some of Kadare’s novels is ideologically or in terms of action linked to a series of characters, like Ahmet Zogu, Mehmet Shehu, Koçi Xoxe, Beqir Balluku, Liri Belishova, Khrushchev, Mao Zedong, becomes the center of a network of political and ideological events. Other personalities that appear in his prose are from the sphere of Albanian cultural history, but also the political history, such as Faik Konica, Gjergj Fishta, Anton Harapi. Kadare, in his novel “The Dark Year”, using the caricature-style description and narration, sketches, among others in this novel, the characters of King Vid and Queen Sofia. Whereas, the novelette “Ballad for J.G.”, is a literary tribute to Jusuf Gërvalla, the prominent Albanian intellectual, of a time of great turning point for the new history of Kosova and Albanians in general.
