One Book in Two Political Systems: The Bible in Latvian in the 1950s and 1960s

Summary/Abstract: This article examines translation and publishing of the Bible and its parts during the Cold War in Soviet Latvia and Latvian diaspora in the West. The novelty of this article lies in the use of archive files from the Church of England archive in Lambeth Palace (London), as well as attention to topics like the Bible publishing and distribution in Soviet Latvia both legally and underground, the Bible as a performative political tool in the context of West-East confrontations. The Bible in the Soviet period was a book that did not exist in the public space because it was not available in stores and libraries, but at the same time it was a tool of Soviet propaganda. On the other hand, in the West, the Bible distribution in the countries of the Eastern Bloc was one of the controversial topics. It was questioned whether it is ethical to cooperate with governmental and non-governmental organizations (including religious ones) in these countries and what channels of distribution of banned books (legal or illegal) should be used.
