Summary/Abstract: Fantasy though being a fictional literary genre often contains elements from the real world and different cultures. In texts written by popular authors we can notice usage of the cultural codes in order to make characters, plot or fictional world more probable. One of the elements of the code which is commonly used in fantasy novels are elements of folklore or folk beliefs present in a particular region. On the one hand, they make a text more interesting for the reader, and on the other, names of legendary characters or local superstitions can create a significant obstacle for a translator, who will look for specific translational strategies. One of authors using elements of the cultural code in his books was Terry Pratchett. This can be observed especially in his series “The Discworld”. In this article some problems connected with elements of folklore and translational strategies will be presented on the example ofextracts of the “Discworld” novels.
