Introduction of cryptocurrencies in the investment portfolio

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to test potential methods of integrating cryptocurrencies into the investment portfolio and to analyze the benefits and risks that may arise when resorting to investing in this asset class. Through a case study, five different portfolios were tested, consisting of the S&P Global 1200 Index, the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index, gold and bitcoin. The paper analyses the price evolution and volatility of each asset class in order to determine whether adding cryptocurrencies to a classic portfolio can improve its performance or whether it brings significant risks. The obtained results indicate that, in general, adding cryptocurrencies to the portfolio can improve its performance. However, the impact varies depending on the portfolio chosen and the period analysed. In conclusion, the paper provides a detailed analysis of the behavior of cryptocurrencies in the investment portfolio and highlights the importance of a cautious and carefully planned approach when deciding to use them as a diversification tool.
