Summary/Abstract: The modern trend towards integration, leading to regional economic integration, will contribute greatly to opening up the international economy. Regional associations will not form an exclusive economic sphere, but will encourage the exchange of goods and services by stimulating national growth, and will also encourage liberalization through increased demand for membership of regional economic blocs. The members of regional economic blocs still depend on trade with non-member countries. This suggests that regional blocks are motivated not by the desire to exclude non-member countries, but by the need to ensure greater liberalization between members. It is obvious, therefore, that the forces promoting regional economic integration are fundamentally liberal, not protectionist.
