Summary/Abstract: This text focuses on some of the first children’s books that have gained popularity in many countries around the world. The genesis of children’s literature in the Western world directly corresponds to that of children’s illustration. Their development is in parallel because they complement each other as means of expression. A few trends regarding the functions of children’s illustration that have occur with the spread of literature are outlined, as well as some social, aesthetic and other features over time.
