Summary/Abstract: The article contains a presentation and discussion of selected issues of dreaming consciousness. The first concerns the adaptive meaning of consciousness during sleep. The second issue concerns the cognitive characteristics of dreaming consciousness. The effect of a critical review of research and theories is that: (1) dreaming consciousness is not a biological adaptation, (2) dreaming consciousness is a form of degraded cognitive representation compared to wakefulness. In particular, the dreaming consciousness contains deficits of intentionality (attention) and higher cognitive forms, including executive dysfunctions.
