Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this paper, which is part of a thesis, is to showcase the importance of the self and at the same time how it “manifests” itself within literature. The action of this novel takes place in England, and Mr. Stevens is the main character. It is a first-person narrative with the magical power to entice us better and make us side with Mr. Stevens. However, at the same time, because he “slips” some essential things at times, we manage to have an opinion and interpretation of our own. Mr. Stevens is a pure-blood British butler; he has impeccable penmanship and wording and conveys meaning in a complex and upright way. However, that is not always the case – as we shall see in the following analysis.
