Summary/Abstract: One of the key features in literature is represented by the mixture and matching of different artistic elements with historical, social and cultural background. The novel is the writer’s masterpiece, the mirror of that particular historical era. Only this form of literature depicts so minutely both the time and the space for the writer and the reader, as well. Balzac’s work is the best example when it comes to identifying the role and the functions of the space in the literary field. When it comes to both the exterior and the interior, we notice the thorough description of each and every object. This image completes the bigger picture of the habitat where characters live, love, suffer and ultimately die. Starting with the macrocosm by describing urban and rural areas, going to specific topographic and architectural details of a region or a particular social category in order to capture the microcosm of indoor areas where characters live and interact. Objects that surround characters are carefully depicted, the main goal being that of completing the physical portrait with the moral one. Everything is showcased only after a thorough psychological and physiological research on the behalf of the author.
