Summary/Abstract: Text aims to describe exploratory factorial analysis of need for social approval measured with Social Desirability Questionnaire. It outlined the most popular definitions and hitherto known results of studies concerning factorial analysis of social desirability construct. Ambiguity of previous results was underlined, and the need for analyses for Social Desirability Questionnaire was suggested. The questionnaire is a very popular self-descriptive paper-and-pencil tool measuring the intensity of need for social approval, and it is available for about 40 years. Based on the study, completed in group of 398 respondents aged 18-62 (M = 23,21; SD = 6,23), including 271 women aged 18-54 (M = 22,88; SD = 5,12) and 127 men aged 18-62 (M = 23,91; SD = 8,08) it was proven that factorial structure of Social Desirability Questionnaire is complex. Based on series of exploratory factor analyses it was decided, that the best description of obtained results is possible with four factor model, which explains the variance as follows: 28% for the whole group, 29% for women, and 31% for men. Recognized factors referred to social norms and will to consciously present ourselves to others in favorable way (factor I), personal values describing tendency to self-deceive and present in favorable manner to ourselves (factor II), general social norms considering moralistic behaviors aimed at favorable presentation towards others (factor III) and personal values including moralistic behaviors aimed at self-deception and favorable presentation towards ourselves (factor IV). Obtained results are discussed in accordance with previous studies results in this area.
