Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to identify the activities and competences of social workers involved in addiction services. This area covers the care and social rehabilitation of persons suffering from an addiction disorder that requires an interdisciplinary approach, including the engagement of a multidisciplinary team that brings together the expertise of social workers, addictologists, educators, psychotherapeutists and physicians. This approach can be viewed as the basis for networking in addiction services. The competences of social workers can be viewed from various perspectives; this paper is based on recommendations proposed by the Council on Social Work Education and the practical competences concept developed specifically for the Czech environment. Moreover, we specify a theoretical framework for measuring the various competences in the real world of social work praxis. A questionnaire survey was carried out, the sample for which comprised social workers (according to Act No. 108/2006 Coll. on social services) that are active in the field of addiction services. A total of 117 respondents took part in the survey. The results of the questionnaire survey revealed that the most important competences for social workers comprise the ability to be empathetic (94%), the ability to self-reflect (94%) and the ability to handle crisis situations (93%). Similar levels of importance were allocated to the ability to motivate clients (87%), rapid decision making (79%) and the ability to control one´s emotions (78%). The other highly important skills identified by the questionnaire survey comprised the writing and submission of project proposals and fundraising (33%), and people management (47%).
